For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

What is this purpose of the preceding statement? It is taken from Romans chapter 1, verse 20 out of the Holy Bible. Many people today are debating the existence of God. This scripture seems to be saying, however, that His attributes are clearly seen by creation itself. Have you ever observed a finely detail sculpture, like the Lincoln Memorial for example?

Would you ever question within yourself, “I wonder if this was designed or if it came to exist by itself with no sculptor?” Sounds like the height of absurdity, right? Who would look at a sculpture of a man and believe it had no intelligent designer? But for some reason, there are people today who assert that the man himself had no designer. I’m sure I couldn’t convince you that a 19th century log cabin had no builder, and yet how crude is that, or the finest structure for that matter, in comparison to all of creation? Even one human cell has more elements of complexity than the most advanced computer man has ever designed. So, if you would consider it a ridiculous insult to your intelligence for someone to attempt to convince you that the Lincoln Memorial was created by some random series of events, how insulting is it to postulate that Lincoln himself had no creator?

If you saw this mobile of the solar system made with cardboard, wire and string, could I convince you that it spontaneously came together by no act of intelligence or design?

What if I told you that it appeared in precise order after an explosion? Not only that, but an explosion that started with no combustible material? As a matter of fact, it began with no material at all! Would you consider that also an insult to your intelligence? Well, this is the commonly held belief by individuals who dub themselves atheists, secular humanists and naturalists (to name a few) concerning the origin of the universe we live in. Simply put, nothing became something. It then blew up, and became everything. What?! That’s correct. But we know that is a scientific impossibility, right? The Law of Cause and Effect and the Law of Biogenesis both tell us that life could not originate that way. So why would people who claim to believe in science and rational thought adhere to a scientific impossibility when it comes to the greatest impossibility of all. The creation of the entire universe and life itself!

Atheism is the belief that there is no God. No creator. No intelligent design behind the existence of the universe or anything contained therein. Why would someone hold to that belief when it’s “clearly seen” that nothing cannot create? Let’s examine the Biblical statement from Romans 1:20 in context and see if we can arrive at a reasonable conclusion.

Starting with Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them. 20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

When we consider the words “hold the truth in unrighteousness” we see the true motive behind the beliefs held by those who reject God. What does it mean when it says “hold” in this text? It means to suppress. If one acknowledges the obvious, that creation is fool proof evidence of the Creator, then they must acknowledge their accountability to said Creator. I other words, if I acknowledge a governing authority over the city, county, country etc. in which I live, I must abide by certain rules and regulations set forth by the authorities. Since we humans feel like the most self gratifying way of life is to “do it my way” so to speak, the most convenient platform of belief would be the total absence of an absolute moral authority. If the rule of action is set forth by the municipality of “ME”, then I have no one to answer to but “ME” “MYSELF” or “I”. None of which have I ever had any dispute, disagreement with or penalty from. I can always agree with me. I will never fear punishment or retribution from I the king. I never have to fear or suffer any consequence from myself the supreme ruler.

Let’s hear from a Nobel Peace Prize winning researcher. George Wald (November 18, 1906 – April 12, 1997) an American scientist, who is best known for his work with pigments in the eye, said the following: “I will not accept [creation] philosophically, because I do not want to believe in God. Therefore I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible – spontaneous generation arising to evolution.”

See the pattern? Dr. Wald had no problem abandoning everything he “clearly” saw in science because… he just didn’t want to believe in God.

Listen to the words of Jesus Christ on this subject: And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. John 3:19-20

If someone could just “believe God away” they could convince themselves that they wouldn’t have to answer to Him for their moral conduct. That is ultimately the one reason why a person would choose to believe there is no God. Jesus Christ said there is one reason people won’t come to the “Light”. They do not want their evil deeds exposed. To get down to it, it’s called sin. There is no other problem dividing man and God but sin. Sin is defined as breaking God’s law (1 John 3:4).

“Wait a minute!”, you might say, “I’m not Adolf Hitler, John Wayne Gacy or (fill in the blank).” But have you never violated your conscience. If you have, you certainly wouldn’t want a spotlight shone upon it would you? Get the picture? Coming to God according to Jesus is like having a bright beaming light exposing everything impure you’ve ever done. It seems obvious why Dr. Wald and many others would want to avoid that, huh?

We all have an impartial judge (conscience) within us that lowers the gavel every time we time we commit wrong doing. The word conscience means “with knowledge” (con – with / science – knowledge). If you notice it doesn’t require any particular religious training to know it was wrong every time you told a lie. You did it “with knowledge” that it was wrong. That’s the 9th of God’s Ten Commandments. You shall not bear false witness (tell a lie). You can find where the Ten Commandments were given in Exodus 20. Is it a coincidence that we all have this embedded knowledge of right and wrong? Of course not. We were all created by the same God. It simply proves what His Word says in Romans 2:15 “Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.” Jesus taught that the whole law was fulfilled by loving God supremely and loving your fellow man as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40).

So where do you stand? Please examine your conscience. How many times have you lied? How many times have you taken God’s name in vain by saying “OMG” or something like that using God’s name in anger or flippantly. People say things like, “Oh L—d no.” Instead of just saying yes or no, they show how little Lord means to them. Think about it. Have you ever used “Hitler” flippantly or to express disgust. That’s why God said He would not hold anyone guiltless who takes His name in vain (Exodus 20:7). Jesus said, “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28. Did you know that? Even lustful thoughts are adultery in God’s eyes! Have you ever taken anything that didn’t belong to you irrespective of it’s value? Ask yourself, will God let liars, thieves, adulterers and blasphemers into Heaven? You might be thinking, “I have only told a couple lies here and there. I haven’t done all the really bad stuff.” The Bible declares, For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all. (James 2:10) Also in the book of Revelation it says …and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

Well, have you had enough of the bad news? Ready for some good news?! Here are some good news scriptures: 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 1 Timothy 3 For this [is] good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Here is one you’ve likely seen displayed in sports stadiums everywhere. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus also said this, “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3,5) Repent means to “turn around”, to change your direction from following sin, and come to put your trust in Jesus Christ to save you from your sins. 1 Peter 2:24 says, Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. Jesus had never committed sin. He came to the earth for the purpose giving His very life as a sacrifice for our sins. The Bible calls this the atonement (Romans 5:11). It means simply that His death and suffering are a worthy substitute for the eternal punishment that we deserve.

What you must do is recognize your guilt, accept the shed blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse you from your sins, and put your trust in Him to save you. The moment you do that, you will be born again. You will have new life, and will be able to live free from sin. Being set free from sin is evidence that you have truly been saved (Romans 6:18). Jesus said if you love Him you will keep His commandments (John 14:21). Please take time to read the following scriptures concerning genuine salvation (John 15:1-14, Romans 6:17-23, 1 John 2:3-4, Matthew 7:21-23, 1 John 3:5-10, Hebrews 10:26-31, Hebrews 5:9, 1 Timothy 2:19-22, 1John 4:15-17). Be sure to read the Bible daily, and get into a strong Bible believing church fellowship. Then tell as many people as you can about what you learned concerning how to be saved by God’s awesome Gospel!
